For more then 100 years Children’s Hospital has been treating children using the highest standards in both medical practice and medical technology and as a result, has earned a reputation as one of the finest children’s hospitals in the country. Children's Hospital of Michigan is the third oldest children's hospital in the nation and the only free standing children's hospital in the state of Michigan.
Children's Hospital of Michigan ranked among the nation's top 30 hospitals in the U.S. News & World Report's 2008 edition of America's Best Children's Hospitals.
Children’s Hospital of Michigan is among “Top Hospitals” for safety and quality practices in the 2008 Leapfrog Top Hospitals rankings. The Leapfrog rankings are based on a survey conducted at 1,220 hospitals across the country and is considered the most complete and current assessment of hospital quality and safety available. The Leapfrog Group, a coalition created to recognize and reward big leaps in healthcare safety, quality and customer service listed the top 33 hospitals which included 26 adult care facilities and 7 children’s hospitals.
The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has granted DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan Magnet designation for excellence in nursing. Recognized as one of the highest distinctions a hospital can receive, only 288 or less than five percent of all U.S. hospitals have achieved this status.
The hospital was founded in 1886 by several physicians and a group of women who saw the need for better medical care for children in urban Detroit. It provided care to children regardless of race, religion or ability to pay.
