Welcome

Dear Future Colleague,

What an exciting time to be embarking on your training as a pediatrician! Ours is truly a special profession, providing an endless source of joy, fulfillment and wonderment. Given all that the scientific world has learned through the Human Genome Project, you can expect to participate in radical changes and improvements in pediatric care around the world over. The faculty and staff serving the Pediatric Residency Program at Children’s Hospital of Michigan/ Wayne State University School of Medicine in the Detroit Medical Center are committed to providing training with a vision toward the future of pediatric medicine.

We have a vibrant and exciting program. With over 100 residents in training, we offer a diversity of pediatric experiences, including urban and suburban clinical rotations and a tract in international medicine. Our faculty are here because of the opportunity to teach residents, fellows and medical students. Most of us are pediatricians, many are researchers; some of us are administrators; all of us are teachers. Whether through our morning report, senior rounds, international tract seminars, attending rounds, weekly afternoon resident lecture series or radiology conference—to mention a few of our formal teaching activities—we derive great pleasure from our didactic interactions with the residents. Additionally, we encourage and support our residents in research endeavors through dedicated research mentors, a monthly resident research seminar and special funding for research projects.

We welcome you to get to know more about our hospital, staff and patient resources. Our facilities and equipment are technologically extraordinary, but our face is warm and child-friendly. Here you will find an introduction to the intensity, the warmth, the humor, and the challenge, the joy and the camaraderie of working as part of the team at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. As the third oldest children’s hospital in the nation, we are proud of the fact that the American Academy of Pediatrics was founded in Detroit. Since it was founded as Children’s Free Hospital in 1886, Children’s Hospital of Michigan has been committed to the community it serves in Detroit. In Detroit and its surrounding suburbs you will find a friendly and inviting community in which to live and wonderful athletic and recreational opportunities for your leisure time.

We invite you to learn more about our program through our brochure, website or by spending a rotation with us. Thank you for your consideration of our program and we wish you every success in your residency training and careers as pediatricians.
